About Akuapim South District
The Akuapim South District is one of twenty-six Assemblies in Ghana’s Eastern Region, with Aburi serving as the district capital. Carved out of the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality in 2012, it is located along the Accra-Koforidua highway and lies between latitudes 5.5° N and 5.58° N and longitude 0.0° W. The district’s terrain, set among three mountain ranges, results in relatively cool weather, with distinct rainy and dry seasons.
The district’s strength lies primarily in agriculture and tourism, with development plans aimed at fostering growth in these sectors while benefiting other areas. Major towns include Aburi, Kitasi, Ahwerase, Adomorobe, Berekuso, Pakro, and Konkonuru, alongside numerous rural communities.
Akuapim South is renowned for its skilled wood carvers, whose work is sold throughout Ghana. Landmarks in the district include the Peduase Lodge, Aburi Botanic Gardens, Ashesi University, Aburi Girls Senior High School, Aburi Craft Village, and Adonteng Senior High School, all contributing to the district’s rich cultural and educational environment.
Our Connection
Lansing’s sister city relationship with Akuapim South was established in 1997 with a signing at Lansing Trinity AME Church, followed by a reaffirmation ceremony in Ghana in 1999, witnessed by Sharon Lavorel-Rutherford, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy. This has been one of Lansing’s most active sister city partnerships, with a focus on health, education, economic development, culture, and governance.
Over the past nearly 30 years, Lansing and Akuapim South have hosted numerous exchange delegations and implemented programs in areas such as building health clinics, supporting hospitals, providing food security initiatives, and implementing grants in education, health, water, sanitation, and hygiene.
