About Asan

Asan, located in South Chungcheong Province, lies just to the south of the bustling Seoul metropolitan area. Historically renowned for its rejuvenating hot springs, Asan has long been a destination for wellness tourism, drawing visitors from across South Korea and beyond. Over time, the city has become a key industrial hub, home to major factories from global giants like Hyundai Motors, Samsung Electronics, and Samsung Display.
Beyond its industrial prominence, Asan is also steeped in rich cultural heritage, with landmarks such as the Admiral Yi Sun-sin shrine, dedicated to the legendary Korean naval hero. The city’s blend of tradition and modernity makes it a dynamic and thriving place that honors its past while embracing innovation.
Our Connection
Lansing and Asan have been Sister Cities since 2008, a partnership initiated by Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commissioner Christopher Hodshire and Dr. Sung Lee. Over the years, the relationship has flourished, with numerous exchange programs fostering greater understanding and collaboration between the two cities.
In 2023, Asan high school students visited Lansing for an immersive cultural exchange. During their time in the Lansing region, they stayed with host families, visited Lansing Community College, and explored local high schools and vocational facilities. The group also had the opportunity to experience nearby attractions, including ski resorts, the vibrant city of Chicago, and even a trip to Canada.
The exchange continued in 2024, when six Mid-Michigan students traveled to Asan for the 2024 Asan International Youth Camp, joining peers from around the world for an enriching experience in global cultural and educational exchange. These programs have underscored the commitment both cities share to promoting youth development, cultural empathy, and international cooperation.
